Dr. Karen Cureton is in-network with many major insurance companies. However, not every plan offered by a medical insurance company covers naturopathic medicine or acupuncture services. For this reason, it is important to call and check what benefits you have for these services. It is also important to remember that most insurance companies will not cover the costs of supplements or specialized tests. However, medical spending or flex spending accounts typically do, so check the specifics of your plan. In addition to finding out if you have naturopathic or acupuncture coverage, it's important to ask if there is a deductible that you must pay towards these visits before insurance will start to pay for the visits.
Some plans have a cap on either the number of visits insurance will cover or the maximum amount in dollars that they will pay towards either naturopathic or acupuncture services in one year. Sometimes these caps are applied to a combination of services. For example, a plan might have a $1,500 yearly maximum for "alternative care" services including chiropractic, naturopathic, and acupuncture services. Be sure to ask your insurance company if there are any benefit maximums that apply to naturopathic or acupuncture services under your plan.
The copay or co-insurance amount may be different for naturopathic and acupuncture services than it is for seeing an M.D. Please check on these so you know what your out-of-pocket expenses will be.
Since Dr. Cureton often orders lab tests to help determine the cause of your health issues, checking your lab coverage is also important as well as which major labs are in-network with your insurance plan.
For acupuncture and energetic body work, some insurance plans require pre-authorization. This is common with Blue Cross Blue Shield, MODA, Cigna, and ASH.
